Understanding PCOS

Understanding PCOS and the Journey to Permanent Hair Removal

What is PCOS and Why Isn’t It Taught in Schools?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder that affects many women of reproductive age. Despite its prevalence, PCOS is often not adequately covered in educational curriculums, leaving many unaware of its symptoms and impacts. Women with PCOS can experience irregular periods, acne, weight gain, and, notably, excessive hair growth, which can be particularly distressing. Understanding PCOS is the first step in managing its symptoms and finding effective treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis refers to the process of permanent hair removal using a direct current (galvanic), alternating current (thermolysis/short wave), or both. A hair-sized probe is inserted into each hair follicle, administering enough current to permanently kill the stem cells and other growth factors in each follicle. This differs from laser, which utilizes radiofrequency to emit a light that find, heats, and damages the hair follicle. An important difference here is that laser does not target individual hair follicles. Instead, the intensity of the laser is distributed throughout a given region of the body. With laser, some hairs will be permanently disabled, and others will be weakened enough to delay growth for a period of time. This is why laser is referred to as permanent hair reduction, while electrolysis is permanent hair removal.

Which areas of the body can be treated with electrolysis?

All areas of the body can be treated with electrolysis-from head to toe! People seek electrolysis for a variety of reasons. Some of the most common concerns are:

    • Anabolic steroid-induced hair growth
    • Androgen-induced hair growth
    • Excessive Body Hair (general)
    • Birth Control
    • Blonde hair
    • Cushing’s Disease
    • Darker skin tones
    • Ear/Tragus hair removal
    • Eyebrow Shaping
    • Finger/Toe hair removal
    • Glucocorticoid-induced hair growth
    • Hair removal for athletes, dancers, models
    • Hairline shaping
    • Hidradenitis suppurativa
    • Hormone-induced hair growth
    • Hursuitism
    • Hypertrichosis (unspecified)
    • Laser-induced hair growth (paradoxical hypertrichosis)
    • Menopause
    • Metabolic Syndrome
    • Minoxidil-induced hair growth
    • Peri-menopause
    • Polycystic ovarian syndrome
    • Testosterone
    • Individuals who are transition in preperation for surgery
    • Tumorous adrenal glands
    • Tumorous ovarian cysts
    • White, Red, or Gray Hair
    • Widow’s Peak
    • Waxing, plucking, tweezing

How long will it take to be permanently hair free?

Your total treatment time (TTT) depends on a variety of factors including:

  • Previous hair removal methods
  • Density of hair in your treatment area
  • Frequency of appointments

Because hair grows in cycles (anagen, catagen, & telogen), you will need a series of treatments to make progress. At any given time, the hair visible to you only accounts for about 30% of the hair you have on that part of your body, while the rest are in various other stages of growth. This is why it’s important to avoid waxing, plucking, and tweezing (which prolongs the process by inhibiting our ability to see and epilate the hair). We take the position that any visible hair can be effectively treated with electrolysis, so the concern is not to catch the hair in anagen phase, but to avoid unnecessarily prolonging your journey by interrupting the stages of hair growth with methods that pull hair out at the root. Not to mention, waxing can stimulate hair growth!

How does electrolysis feel?

You may feel a quick burst of heat with each epilation. Most clients find this sensation tolerable, and you should advise your electrologist if the sensation is too uncomfortable. Pain tolerance varies by the individual, and sometimes the discomfort cannot be accommodated without compromising your treatment. If you are more pain sensitive, that’s okay! We strongly recommended applying topical anesthetic before treatment.

How Should I Prepare For My Appointment?

It is important to avoid shaving no less than 2-3 days before your scheduled appointment. We will need enough visible hair to grip with a tweezer. For more pre and post appointment tips, Please visit our pre & post page.

What should I expect after treatment?

Redness and swelling is absolutely normal post-treatment. Depending on the treatment modality and your body chemistry, the inflammation may last 1-4 days post treatment (especially after longer, more aggressive treatment sessions). Some tiny pinpoint scabbing is also normal and will certainly go away without long-term or permanent damage. It is important to keep your post-treatment area clean and undisturbed. In addition to products like witch hazel, tea tree oil, and aloe vera gel, we recommend (and sometimes distribute) Manuka Honey or medical grade honey to clients after treatment. This is an excellent antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory gift from our dearest bee friends. The sticky texture also reminds you to KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF THE TREATED AREA!

What type of machine do you use?

We use the Elite Instantron Spectrum, a product of one of the oldest and most reputable machine producers. But more importantly, we are skilled and dedicated practitioners. A growing myth among clients in our industry is the belief that the machine matters. Absolutely nothing matters more than the skill of your electrologist, which is why we urge you to ask questions, test providers, and familiarize yourself with the wonders of electrology!
